Summer Course “Fires: research and analysis” (2nd Edition)

Next days 3, 4 and 5 July we will be holding the second edition of the summer course “FIRES: RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS”, of the courses program offered by the University of Alcalá, which will be directed by Doctors Gemma Montalvo, Mª Gloria Quintanilla and Carlos Martín.

The objective of the course is to give attendees a multidisciplinary, general and theoretical-practical view of fire investigation, addressing various phases: from the intervention of the firemen to its extinction, the inspection of the place of the incident and the location and collection of samples, to the analysis of the vestiges in the laboratories and the expert reports. Critical and preventive aspects, and also the points to be improved in this field of knowledge will be discussed.

Its multidisciplinary approach and the different themes, which will be addressed from different points of view, make the course not only for students, but also for graduates, technicians and professionals. Speakers of great level will take the floor, of fields as diverse as experts, Fire Brigade, General Commissary of Scientific Police, European Space Agency (ESA) and the University.

Finishing EXCHANGE European Project

Over the last months, we have been working to finish EXCHANGE European Project, for the exchange of explosives data to make a comprehensive database though police laboratories cooperation (HOME/2012/ISEC/AG/CBRN/4000003800).

We are quite grateful to Ziiweb company, located in Guadalajara (Spain), for their collaboration during these months for the database development. Its CEO, Javier, was in charge of the software development by a PHP framework. Thanks to him, many features have been implemented and improved in the database. Thus, they are available now for the European Network of Forensic Sciente Institutes (ENFSI) members.

Many users from all over the world have already requested to be part of the EXCHANGE database, not only from ENFSI, but also from the Forensic International Network for Explosives Investigation expert group of ENSFI (FINEX), the Latin American Academy of Criminalistics and Forensic Researches (AICEF) and other forensic and law enforcement networks. Forensic, military, police and governmental institutions from all over the world are already related to the project: Abu Dhabi, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.

New Workshop in the BIBAFOODS European project

We are already working on the next Workshop about “Colloidal carriers for enzymes & how to turn a scientific idea into a succesful start up company”, in the BIBAFOODS School. BIBAFOODS (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-Multi-ITN-606713) focuses on educating young researchers who can develop novel functional foods by use of colloidal delivery systems. BIBAFOODS researchers are developing materials and coatings responsive to external chemical conditions, which are therefore suitable for controlled releases targeted probiotic bacteria and enzymes.

This Workshop will take place in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (Spain) from 15 to 18 Novemver 2015. The BIBAFOODS school is mainly dedicated to young scientists (PhD students, postdocs and young researchers) but is open to all scientific audience. It is focused on covering fundamental and applied advances in the fields of colloidal chemistry and carriers for enzyme. It will include bioformulations (hydrogels, surfactant-lipid phases), colloidal systems templating porous materials; spectroscopic techniques for biomolecular structure and stability; lipid phases and enzymology and industrial views on use and delivery of enzymes.

This school is linked to the development of entrepreneurial skills, managed by invited experts from companies, and covered from distance. One of the topics will be follow-up on the business canvas adding IP and capital to the picture. All participants will receive lab training in Raman spectroscopy by experts. Attendance hours will be about 20h (lectures and practices). A multiple-choice test will be done during the last day of the course. A report based on questions in the entrepreneurial aspect of the course must be submitted shortly thereafter in the entrepreneurial aspect of the course.

RAMANEX. New website already available

After some hard-working months, RAMANEX European Project website is already accessible. A few days ago we talked to you about the bit step forward we made thanks to the TEDAX group of Spanish Civil Guard.

Now, the new WEB is online, with all the Raman spectra we have analyzed for this project, available for everybody with free access. As long as we get more spectra, we will upload them, to try to achieve a Raman collection as big as possible.
